Another Coquitlam Shutout Sets Up Neighbour Rivalry

Fans of summer box lacrosse know how hard it is to fully shutout an opponent. In a sport with a 30-second shot clock, holding a team to zero goals is a test both of defence and goaltending, but also of mental fortitude, focus, and will.

The Coquitlam Adanacs have now done it twice this season, most recently blanking the Burnaby Lakers in game four of their first round series. The Lakers finished the regular season with the third best offence in the league, but scored just 20 goals in the four game series.

That result officially cements Coquitlam into the Minto Cup (which they are hosting), and also sets up a final series with the Port Coquitlam Saints. The Saints finished off a sweep of their own on Wednesday, paced by five goals from Silas Richmond. Catch all five of those goals on the LCD Youtube page below.

The final series features arguably the two closest teams in terms of geography in the entire country. The two home venues for this series, Coquitlam’s “Palace on Poirier,” and the Port Coquitlam Community Center, sit just 8 KM from each other (roughly a ten minute drive on google maps).

Both teams will play in the Minto Cup, so the only thing on the line is a BCJALL trophy. But don’t expect that to dim the intensity of this one, especially given what should be an outstanding crowd atmosphere.

Following with Friday tradition, the three stars are the following:

⭐: Jack Kask, Coquitlam Adanacs Jr. A. Allowed 20 Goals in four playoff games, including a 37-save shutout in game 4.

⭐⭐: Joey Spallina, Orangeville Northmen Jr. A. 2 GP in round two, 9 goals and 7 assists.

⭐⭐⭐: Justin Tavares, Mimico Mountaineers Jr. A. 2 GP in round two, 6 goals playing primarily as a defender.

Ontario

In the OJLL, Orangeville leads St. Catharines 2-0 and Mimico is tied 1-1 with Peterborough. Find the full recaps of those series below.

Meanwhile in the MSL, the Peterborough Lakers defeated the Owen Sound North Stars 15-6 on Thursday, bringing round one to a close. Peterborough will not square off with Brooklin, while Six Nations will take on a Cobourg team that is fresh off beating the Oakville Rock.

British Columbia

Aside from the news of the series between the Adanacs and Saints, the other major story is the race for the WLA playoffs.

The Victoria Shamrocks remain undefeated at 16-0, but after that it gets complicated. New Wesminster (8-8), Langley (7-8) and Maple Ridge (7-8) currently sit in playoff spots and have the best chance to stay there.

But with four games to take place over the weekend, a lot can change. The Burnaby Lakers play twice and will likely need to win both to keep pace, while the Coquitlam Adanacs will need a win over the Lakers to keep their hopes alive. Meanwhile Victoria and Maple Ridge both play the Timbermen, and will look to finish their seasons on high notes.

Alberta

The St. Albert Miners and Okotoks Raiders are set to play for the RMLL championship, with that series beginning Saturday.

However it should be noted that there is a correction to some previous writing in this newsletter. While LCD had previously published that the Raiders and Miners would meet again in the finals, it was actually the Calgary Mountaineers who played in the finals and who competed in the Minto Cup.

The Raiders will look to punch their ticket to the Minto for the first time since the 2018 Minto Cup.
