After months of speculation, the Rochester Knighthawks released a statement Monday regarding the state of the team and their future in Rochester.

According to COO Pete Guelli, the organization will no longer be operating as of June 30th and the Knighthawks will work with the National Lacrosse League in looking for new ownership opportunities.

The move comes just six seasons after the second iteration of the Knighthawks came to Rochester. In that time, the team has gone 34-50. This past season was their best since re-entering the league, going 10-8 before falling in the quarter-finals.

This year also saw Connor Fields become the first player from this version of the Knighthawks to win MVP, and the team saw their highest average attendance of 5,455 of any of their six seasons.

The NLL also released a statement, saying thanking the Pegula family for their contributions and striking a positive tone. The statement writes that “the NLL is actively engaging potential new ownership to ensure the long-term success of professional lacrosse in Rochester.”

The NLL’s statement also says that the league is “confident that with the right partners, the Knighthawks organization will continue to thrive.”

The full statement from the league is available below.

The news comes after the Panther City Lacrosse Club dispersed last summer.
