The Six Nations Chiefs won the MSL championship on Tuesday, with an 11-8 victory over the Peterborough Lakers.
The Chiefs will now host the Mann Cup, which will begin on September 5th. They will compete against the Victoria Shamrocks, who won the WLA on Friday.
Lyle Thompson and Cody Jamieson led the scoring for the Chiefs with 4 points each, which was the same total as Peterborough Lakers forwards Joe Resetarits, Rob Hellyer, and Turner Evans. Warren Hill made 52 saves to secure the victory for the Chiefs.
Hill and goaltending partner Doug Jamieson were awarded the Shooter Davis Award for playoff MVP. The Chiefs allowed just 73 goals in 10 games during the playoffs. They allowed 10 or more goals just once during the playoff run.
The win was the second MSL title in a row for the Chiefs, and 5th since 2013. No other MSL team has won the title besides Peterborough and Six Nations since 2009. The Brampton Excelsiors won the Mann Cup in 2008 and 2009.
Six Nations won the Mann Cup in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2013, 2014, 2016 and last year in 2023. A win in 2024 would be their eighth as a franchise.
Meanwhile, the Shamrocks will look to win their 10th Mann Cup, and first since 2015. They are the only WLA franchise to win the Mann since 2001. In addition to 2015, the Shamrocks won the title in 2003 and 2005. The meeting against the Chiefs will be a rematch of the 2013 and 2014 Mann Cups, both won by Six Nations.
It’s also an historic tournament due to the fact that both teams were undefeated in the regular season. Victoria had the first perfect season in the history of the WLA, and the Chiefs were perfect as well in Ontario.
That was until the playoffs, where both teams lost games. The Chiefs fell down 2-0 against the Lakers before storming back, while the Shamrocks played a full five-game series against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
