  • How does UVA do against the Hopkins invert defence.

Follow along below all game long for more updates:

First Quarter

Hello folks and welcome to the live updates for the second game today. Curious to see how much the home crowd will help Hopkins.

14:30 – Virginia runs a three man weave up top with Colsey, Schutz and Shelly. Nice opening save from Ierlan.

12:33 – UVA is not going to slide much. Hop needs to be aggressive here.

12:13 – Penalty to Schroter. Not sure if there is a seperate ref crew from game one but they were letting everything go this morning. Early timeout for Virginia? Wonder what that is all about.

12:00 – 1-0 Hopkins

UVA pressing out on everyone, almost works to perfection. Melendez strokes it. If he gets going that would be huge for Hopkins.

11:26 2-0 Hopkins

Dream start for Hopkins. Great skip pass from Angelus to Degnon. He’s got a sweet stroke.

Something to monitor: Nunes didn’t seem to see either of those first two shots very well.

10:15 – Unreal save by Chayse. He can go bonkers.

8:34 3-0 Hopkins

I agree with Anish, Nunes probably wants to have that one. But another great play by Melendez. Hopkins is winning more matchups than I expected.

8:24 4-0 Hopkins

Goalie change for UVA. WOW.

Kilrain is an incredible player, he’s a stud. The defensive shooting across the country is really impressive. We will see if Morris can turn this thing around. HUGE possession for the Cavs.

7:57 4-1 Hopkins

Blue Jays let their guard down and give some momentum back. Very different pace already as this morning.

Scott Smith eats a Shellenberger shot. Don’t rub it! Hidden play that wins games.

7:11 4-2 Hopkins

Shelly can hose it. Hopkins needs to play with better intensity here. That was way too easy for Shelly.

5:50 – That was more what I thought this would look like for UVA D. Stout, winning matchups, etc. Morris still untested.

4:46 – UVA winning the hung situations so far. Another big save by Chayse.

Very different officiating from this morning. Syracuse fans punching air.

4:11 5-2 Hopkins

Another Melendez goal on EMO. Great pass by Collison and sick quick stick. This is becoming a story here.

What a hit by Shelly!

3:29 5-3 Hopkins

Hustle play by Shelly leads to Millon step-down. This game is wild so far. When Millon has time and space he is ELITE.

I like Millon at midfield but would clear out space for him to get down the alley. He is an elite shooter on the run and I would flex that if I’m the Cavs.

10-man ride causes a turnover for UVA. Old School Cavaliers.

Nice save by Morris there. Bad start by UVA but they battle back. Interior defence by Hopkins and on-ball D from UVA will be the story going forward.

Second Quarter

14:00 – Great save from Morris. Bauer winning matchups for Hopkins but they aren’t capitalizing.

12:05 – Another flag. So different from this morning. UVA has to find some solutions here man down.

Huge stand for UVA. Force feed by Hopkins. Feels like Hop has had the ball most of the game.

10:15 Millon is going to be a superstar. But for now, getting him to his left hand is a win for the defence. Good save by Chayse.

9:39 – 5-4 Hopkins

Sick move by Millon right in my face. Initially gets pushed left but gets the question mark to go.

9:25 6-4 Hopkins

Great shot by Angelus on the fast break. Hop has scored twice on EMO and three times in transition. UVA needs to turn the risk down on faceoffs.

8:25 – Great timeout by Milliman

Hopkins hasn’t created much at 6v6 but has been lethal everywhere else.

Chayse goes for the shot but UVA backs it up. Tempo high now.

6:15 – 7-4 Hopkins

Degnon creates the turnover and eventually leads to Melendez with another. Degnon is so solid. A great shooter obviously but does everything else well. I think UVA can shut the door here if they can get it to 6v6. But maybe that’s a big if.

5:01 – Chayse wins the run-out after a good look. He’s a great player and teammate. Showing why today.

2:46 7-5 Hopkins

Much needed goal by Boyden. UVA is sticking around here. Ierlan has been tough but for the most part getting good looks.

Hopkins needs to avoid getting hung up on defence. Cormier isn’t going to be cold all day. They are getting smoked in those situations and lucky to not have more goals scored.

Halftime

Ok, let’s talk adjustments.

Virginia: I think they will feel better about that half than we might think. Defensive transition killed them, especially off faceoffs. At 6v6, their defence has been fine and Morris was solid in there.

They need to simplify: clear the ball, cut the break, and shoot better.

They can’t let Ierlan ruin their confidence. You have to keep shooting.

Hopkins: Really good half from the Jays. They have to avoid hung situations and generally be better off the ball. They got lucky on some of those Cormier misses.

The Jays played with great energy though, especially on the ride. If they can continue to create offence off the ride, faceoffs, and defence, they will be fine.

I think they can be even more aggressive with the ball as well. Virginia does not want to slide.

Third Quarter

Back up here for the second half. UVA playing 5v5 and using sub-game to their advantage. Cormier misses. Goal-scoring is a fickle thing.

13:10 – Kilrain wins the matchup with Millon. Making him a lefty is important. Degnon misses an easy one in transition. Remember that one.

UVA forces the shot clock violation. Quint is spot on about the dodgers. Nobody winning matchups. Still only one goal 6v6.

11:10 – Ierlan stuffs PC again. He’s been excellent.

9:51 – 7-6 Hopkins

Shellenberger gets a pick over the top to break a long scoreless streak in the game. His shooting is really impressive.

Came off a Morris save, credit to him for stabilizing this game.

9:13 – 7-7

Very smart everywhere from UVA. Sub games create offence for them and also let them rest their middies (they only want to play 3 guys). I don’t understand why players and teams still run to the midline when they are way behind the play. It’s obviously better to just play D.

TO by Hopkins. HUGE possesion here.

CHAYSE IERLAN!

This game is intoxicated. Love it

Hopkins scored their last goal with 6:15 in Q2. Going on more than 15 mins of game time.

4:23 8-7 Hopkins

Starts with the shorty on Angelus. He’s dynamic. Maybe a bit reckless there from Virginia, especially off of Degnon, who’s virtually automatic.

If Hopkins can find some more switches for Angelus that would be huge. He’s one of the only guys getting after their defender.

Either way, much needed there for Hopkins.

Seems like a lot of faceoffs coming up blue right now.

WOW. Not sure that was the right call.

The goalmouth is such a dumb rule.

2:05 9-7 Hopkins

Hop gets the call and Peshko gets some english on the bouncer. Sick review on slow motion. Shameless plug: Peshko went to my high school. SMC!

1:37 10-7 Hopkins

Really tough stretch for Virginia. Hopkins extra man has been spectacular. Degnon is a baller.

Cavaliers still have only given up 1 goal at 6v6. Their inability to a) defend other situations and b) get to 6v6 has been the story.

Fourth Quarter

14:38 – Sick play by Wayer but hits the pipe. Shooting luck has definitely been in favor of Hopkins.

UVA ran a 1-4-1 with Shelly at the top there. Good set for them.

13:47 – UVA causes a turnover on the ride. Expect they will be in that for the rest of the week. Hopkins up to 7 failed clears now.

12:55 – good take by Schutz but another save by Ierlan. Another failed clear after that by Hopkins. Playing hot potato right now.

12:00 – TO by Virginia. This Hopkins D is awesome. I thought Virginia would have more success today. Some great saves, but they’ve been stout back there.

10:21 10-8 Hopkins

Boyden gets a hatty off a broken play. Cormier ground ball and nice feed to Boyden creates the goal. Peppers the low corner.

Virginia doesn’t seem that fired up but are only down by 2 goals. Their D has been awesome in the second half.

In the transfer portal era, it’s a little surprising that Virginia couldn’t find one more guy to play on their second line. This team feels like if they had one more effective body on offence they would be in business. Depth middies have been a real non-factor.

Shot clock violation by Hopkins. The Cavalier defence is playing their part.

6:30 – Crazy sequence… two sick saves by Chayse leads to fast break. Hopkins turnover. Cormier scores the other way.

6:25 – 10-9 Hopkins

Cormier finally breaks through. Both teams are fading right now. Gut check time with the one-goal lead.

Too passive for Hopkins. Nobody looks like they want to get to the goal. Fortune favors the bold here!

I’m a Ben Wayer fan. Powerful stories written about him this week. Rooting for that guy.

Going to video review to see about a shot-clock reset. Seemed like a good save on the broadcast.

Good save by Ierlan. Lucky break for Hopkins to get the free timeout here. Ierlan still solidly in sicko mode.

Shorty on Shelly.

2:59 10-10

Millon scores but it might be in the crease. Stay tuned.

Looks like it’s coming back.

Goal stands. WOW

Millon has been outstanding.

Huge GB by Wayer. UVA ball with 2:46. Anyone’s game.

It’s gotta be either Shelly or Millon here. Legend time.

2:23 – Great save by Ierlan on a good look. Hopkins turns it over in 10-man. Flag down! UVA man up incoming!

Ok… 48 seconds to go here, UVA man-up. Everyone looks gassed.

35 seconds…

Timeout with 11 seconds left in PP, 29 seconds in regulation.

WOW. Virginia doesn’t get a shot off. Holy.

Ok not really sure what to say here. Hopkins hasn’t scored since the third quarter and basically had no chances. Collison is the obvious pick for Hopkins as he already scored twice this year in OT. Millon has been the most dangerous Cavalier.

I wonder if one of the transition players would step into one here. What a weird game.

Overtime

Chaos off the faceoff. Hopkins ball.

14 seconds left on shot clock.

MORRIS SAVE!

Virginia is so tired. Gotta find one more play here.

Shelly miss. UVA backup.

Hopkins causes a turnover behind the net. Hopkins ball and a timeout.

Nobody on Hop is winning matchups. Gotta try to scheme something up here.

1:06 left, Hopkins ball. Winner take all.

Yager makes a great play to cause a turnover.

Double OT!!!

Weird sequence. Hopkins forces a turnover and Angelus seems to pull the ball out despite the low-clock. Melendez actually works for a decent shot at the end but a nice save by Morris. Not to be too harsh, nut nobody seems like they really want the ball right now.

Double OT begins…

Faceoff won by Hopkins. Questionable push call.

Blocked shot by UVA. 25 seconds on the shot clock.

Caused TO by UVA. Cavalier ball.

Hopkins hasn’t scored in a while.

Shelly top center. Timeout UVA.

1:54 left to go, UVA ball.

GAME OVER!!

SHELLY WINS IT!!!

Shellenberger takes it from top center, drives down to the goal-line, and Scott Smith slips slightly. Shelly gets back up the hash and buries it lefty. What a weird, weird game.

Shelly wanted it at the end. I think that was the difference in the game. They knew they could just give it to him and let him go.

UVA vs Maryland going to be a fun semifinal.

Thanks for following along folks. Will have a recap tomorrow. Lacrosse is the best.
