The Box Lacrosse Roundup

Today marks the second edition of the Box Lacrosse Roundup. As a reminder, this newsletter will be sent on Monday and Friday mornings and will feature a collection of scores, articles, and links that summarize the week that was in Canadian box lacrosse.

It was a busy week across Canada as Junior lacrosse really shifted into full gear and Senior lacrosse kicked off as well. Let’s get right into the action.

Ontario

OJLL

Monday May 20: Six Nations Arrows 8 – Burlington Blaze 6

It’s unsurprising that the Blaze may take some time to get settled this year after a Minto Cup win last year and graduating the majority of their roster. That is the natural ebb and flow of Junior lacrosse, and one of the things that makes it so exciting year over year.

Despite that, the Arrows have to be pleased to get a victory on bread and cheese day. Thunder Hill was the story in this game, scoring 5 goals and 2 assists, while Chase Cogan had 1 goal and 3 assists for the Arrows. Will Macleod (1 goal, 4 assists) and Alex Marinier (3 goals, 1 assist) led the scoring for the Blaze.

After allowing 4 goals in the first period, Arrows goaltender Sakaronhiotane Thompson allowed just two in the final 40 minutes of action. He is one of many outstanding goalies in Ontario this year.

Tuesday May 21: Orangeville Northmen 11- Whitby Warriors 8

After a disappointing end to their undefeated regular season last year, the Northmen got out to a strong start in 2024 with the victory over Whitby. Dylan Sanderson led all scorers with 3 goals and 2 assists. while Trey Deers, Vince Onofrio all had 3 points. Lucas Littlejohn had 3 points to lead the Warriors.

Lindyn Hill got his first win as the goalie for the Northmen after the graduation of Chris Origlieri. As the starter for the Northmen, history would suggest he would be pretty good.

Wednesday May 22 – Toronto Beaches 12 – St. Catharines Athletics 7

Willem Firth and goaltender Thomas Kiazyk were the stories for Beaches. First finished with 5 goals and 3 assists. Keaton Zavitz added 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Athletics.

Thursday May 23: Oakville Buzz 10 – Whitby Warriors 8

This was another game that broadcasted by the Jon Donville and the OJLL. The stream can be found here.

Back from Yale University, Will Sheehan led the Buzz with 4 goals and 2 assists. Jack Macalpine had the opposite for the Buzz, finishing with 2 goals and 4 assists. Lucas Littlejohn led all scorers with 5 goals and 2 assists for the Warriors.

Buzz goalie Evan Constnatopoulos stands at 6’7 and was outstanding in this game. He was a member of the Bandits practice roster this season and for the championship. Learning from Matt Vinc and company appears to have helped. Go figure!

MSL

Monday May 20 – Six Nations Chiefs 15 – Owen Sound North Stars 4

The MSL season kicked off with a season opening victory for Mann Cup favourites Six Nations Chiefs as they defeated the Owen Sound north Stars 15-4. This game was competitive early, as the North Stars scored three minutes into the second period to make it 4-3. The Chiefs then scored the next 12 goals of the game to secure the victory.

Austin Staats led all scorers with 7 goals and 2 assists. His brother Randy Staats (2 goals, 3 assists), Cody Jamieson (5 assists), Shayne Jackson (2 goals, 3 assists) and Ross Hill (1 goal, 4 assists) were all prolific.

British Columbia

BCJALL

The BCJALL is also broadcasting on Youtube this summer with free streams, a great initiative for lacrosse fans everywhere. Check out their Youtube Channel here.

It was a quiet week this week in the BCJALL, with just two games since Monday.

Tuesday May 21 – New Westminster Salmonbellies 13 – Langley Thunder 6

The Bellies used a huge run in the second period to put this game out of reach. They scored with 3 seconds remaining in the first period to make it 5-2, and when the Thunder next scored, the score was 12-2.

Lukas Nielsen led the scoring in this game with 5 goals and 2 assists, while Wren Glanville added 3 goals and 1 assist. Austin Vanichuk led the Thunder with 2 goals and 3 assists.

Tuesday May 21 – Nanaimo Timbermen 12 – Victoria Shamrocks 6

The Timbermen had an explosive first period, leading 6-2 after the first stanza, a lead they would never relinquish. Andrew Bowman (3 goals and 2 assists) and Ty Pilkington (2 goals and 2 assists led the scoring for the Timbermen.

The win pushed the Timbermen to 4-0 on the season, and they are the only undefeated team remaining in the league.

WLA

Thursday May 23 – New Westminster Salmonbellies 14 – Burnaby Lakers 9

The Bellies kicked off their defence of the WLA Championship with a nice victory at Queen’s Park. Will Malcom returned from his 104 point season for the Panther City Lacrosse Club and led all scorers with 6 goals and 2 assists. Kevin Crowley (3 goals, 4 assists) and Logan Schuss (1 goal, 5 assists) were good for the Bellies as well.

Ben Stewart (2 goals, 3 assists) and Jacob Dunbar (3 goals, 2 assists) led for the Lakers.

Alberta

RMLL

There was only one game in the RMLL since the last newsletter. Let’s jump into it.

Monday May 20: Junior A Mountaineers 11 – Saskatchewan SWAT 9

This was another competitive result for the SWAT at home. Owen MacCarthy led all scorers with 3 goals and 2 assists for the Mountaineers, while Max Janousek (1 goal, 3 assists) and Hudson Isaac (3 goals, 1 assist) chipped in as well.

Eli Cowan (2 goals, 1 assist), Dillan Scott (2 goals, 1 assist) and Mason Luoma (3 assists) were the leaders for the SWAT.
