The Box Lacrosse Roundup

Welcome to the very first edition of the Box Lacrosse Roundup Newsletter. The goal for this newsletter is to release twice each week, on Monday and Friday mornings, and to provide a recap of all the box lacrosse action taking place around Canada throughout the summer.

Box lacrosse in Canada remains a regional game, and most fans are aware of what occurs in their province or league, but less aware of the other leagues. The goal of this newsletter is to provide an easy, quick, and national recap of all the action. Where and when we can, we will highlight the work of writers and content creators around the country, and we will continue to establish Lacrosse Culture Daily as the home of the best box coverage on the internet.

Readers of this newsletter should expect scores, standings, and statistical recaps, along with a curated list of box lacrosse content from our site and others. Lets get right into it.

OJLL

Friday May 17: St. Catharine’s Athletics 11 – Brampton Excelsiors 9

The OJLL kicked off on Friday night with a fun game between the St. Catharine’s Athletics and Brampton Excelsiors. LCD’s own Jon Donville was on the broadcast alongside Matthew Caruk, and he will be calling games all summer long.

The Athletics won the game 11-9, and were led by Christian LeFeuvre who had 4 goals and 3 assists. Keaton Zavitz was excellent for the Athletics as well with 3 goals and 3 assists.

Brampton was led by Cornell University product Bowie Horseman who had 4 goals and 2 assists. Dante Bowen added 3 points while primarily playing defence.

The replay of that game can be found here. At the 37:40 mark of the Youtube stream, there was a special feature to honour the late Dean McLeod, former commissioner of the OJLL and a Brampton legend. It’s worth a watch.

The OJLL has a loaded slate this week as the league really kicks into full gear.

BCJALL

The BCJALL is slightly ahead of the other two Junior A leagues, and have had several games. With too many to recap here, these were the games just over the weekend.

Friday May 17: Port Coquitlam Saints 9 – Coquitlam Adanacs 7

Maybe a surprise for some lacrosse fans, but POCO found an early season victory over perennial power and defending champion Coquitlam. Anahalihs Doxtator led all scorers with 2 goals and 3 assists for the Saints. Hunter Meyer and Andrew Cowan both had a goal and 3 assists.

Saturday May 18: Victoria Shamrocks 13 – Delta Islanders 11

Koen Block led all scorers for the Shamrocks who picked up the win. Sean Clark, Brett Bridges, and Dorian Connelley had 3 points each. Turner Anderson and Silas Richmond led the scoring for Delta. Richmond is coming off an outstanding freshmen season at UAlbany that culminated in a tournament appearance.

Saturday May 18: Nanaimo Timbermen 13 – Burnaby Lakers 7

This was the widest scoring margin of the weekend, as goaltender Keegan Okino recorded 36 saves and held the Lakers to just 7 goals. It was a balanced scoring effort from the Timbermen, but they were led by Andrew Bowman and Matt Boas, each with 5 points. Ethan M’Lot had 5 points for Burnaby.

Sunday May 19: Port Coquitlam Saints 10 – Victoria Shamrocks 9

The Saints picked up their second massive win of the weekend over Victoria. With that, they defeated both of the most recent BCJALL champions in one weekend. Obviously it is still early season, but the Saints will take it. Four players had 3 points for the Saints, as Hunter Meyer, Josh Mills, Damonie Thomas and Andrew Cowan all shared the workload. Sean Clark and Koen Block both had 6 points for the Shamrocks in the losing effort.

Sunday May 19: Nanaimo Timbermen 11 – Langley Thunder 7

Andrew Bowman polished off a nice weekend for the Timbermen, bringing his weekend total to 11 points with a 5 goal effort in this one. Ty Pilkington had a goal and 4 assists for the Timbermen as well. Calum Munro and Nathaniel Leroux led the scoring for Langley.

After three games, the Nanaimo Timbermen lead the standings with a perfect record. Although, some teams have only played one game. Expect the games played to even out over the week. The full standings can be found here.

RMLL

It was a relatively quiet weekend for the RMLL with the long weekend. The Mounties defeated the SWAT twice in a weekend series, and now sit at 2-1 on the season.

Saturday May 18: Mounties 8 – SWAT 4

In an obviously low-scoring affair, no player on the Mounties had more than 2 points. Arley Wasson, Reis Bower, Max McKernan, Caiden Moon, and Max Janousek all had 2 points. Nate Gallant led all scorers with 3 assists for the SWAT.

Sunday May 19: Mounties 11 – SWAT 8

Janousek had 3 goals and 2 assists for the Mounties to lead the way, followed by a goal and 3 assists from Wasson. Gallant again led all scorers for the SWAT with 3 goals and 2 assists.
