Rookie Report: Eccleston Breaks Out

It was another solid weekend of production from the 2025 rookie class, though it was not necessarily the usual suspects who got it done. This is the NLL Rookie Report.

Robbie Turpin became the 48th rookie to compete in an NLL game this season, making his league debut with the San Diego Seals. Turpin was the 14th overall selection in the 2024 NLL Entry draft after winning the Minto Cup last summer with the Coquitlam Adanacs. 

Toron Eccleston Owns the Weekend

But the star of the week was Toron Eccleston, who had 4 goals and 4 assists to lead the Georgia Swarm to victory over the Vegas Desert Dogs. Eccleston previously had just 2 points in his first two outings, but exploded onto the scene Saturday. 

The former Lenoir-Rhyne and St. Joe’s star was the 6th overall selection in the 2023 NLL Entry Draft by the Swarm, and looked the part on the weekend. 

Staying in that game. Jackson Webster had 3 goals and 2 assists for the Desert Dogs as he continued his mid-season flourish. With 15 points in his four games played, Webster has been one of the most effective rookies in the league since drawing into the Vegas lineup. 

Dyson Williams had another good outing for Albany as well with 4 assists, while Adam Poitras (1 goal, 2 assists), Levi Anderson (2 goals, 1 assist) and Mike Robinson (1 goal, 2 assists) had big nights as well. Williams has a game in hand on Brennan O’Neill, but did take over the lead for rookie scoring with 33 points in nine games.

D-Fence

On the defensive side of the ball. Will Johansen led all rookies last week with 12 loose balls, while Ottawa’s Reed Kurtz had 9. Poitras, Robinson, Brian Cameron, and Jake Piseno each had 7 loose balls. 

In the net, Albany’s Andrew Kidd had the most work of his young career, playing 47:41 in their loss in Banditland. Kidd had not previously played more than 5:34 in his career, but handled himself well. He allowed 10 goals and made 30 saves against the vaunted Buffalo offence.
