The WLL announced their inaugural franchises on Tuesday, just weeks after the PLL announced the launch of the women’s league in November.

The four inaugural teams are the Boston Guard, the California Palms, the Maryland Charm, and the New York Charging.

Along with those teams, the league announced team captains for each franchise.

The Guard will be led by Charlotte North, who broke records and won a national championship at nearby Boston College. The Charm will be captained by Alex Aust-Holman, a Maryland Terrapin legend and current assistant coach for the Terps. New York’s captain is Izzy Scane, NCAA Division I lacrosse’s all-time leading scorer. And California is led by Ally Mastroianni. All four women were national champions during their collegiate careers.

While the franchise locations were likely not surprising to lacrosse fans, one interesting note is the similarity to the existing PLL franchises. Each of the four WLL teams adopted similar colours, mascots, and design elements as the corresponding PLL franchise in that market.

This is similar to the WNBA, where teams like the Washington Mystics (owned by the NBA’s Washington Wizards) use similar mascots.

The WLL will play their first competition as part of the PLL’s Championship Series event in February.

Below are the explanations behind the four new logos.
