The story of NCAA lacrosse this week has undoubtedly been the NJIT Highlanders and their 5-0 start to the season. It’s been the best start for the program in their young history, and the players and coaches deserve immense credit.
Leading the way for NJIT are two Canadian players. Jack Bowie (Victoria, BC) led all Canadian scorers on the mens side this week with 6 goals in their two victories this week. Arthur Miller (Nanoose Bay, BC) added 4 goals and an assist for the Highlanders as well.
Bowie had five goals in their Wednesday night overtime victory over Monmouth, and Miller had 4 of his points on Saturday as they defeated Manhattan. It wasn’t their first victory in sudden death. Bowie scored against Siena to win earlier this year as well.
While Bowie, Miller and their teammates have been the story of the week, the Canadian goal-scorer of the week was Noah Manning (Victoria, BC). The Denver Pioneer scored 5 goals and added an assist in a comeback top ten victory against Cornell.
Manning’s efforts earned him the Big East Offensive Player of the Week Award.
On the women’s side, Bucknell’s Alex Nesbitt (Brooklin, Ontario) led all Canadians in scoring this week with 9 points across two games. She had a goal and an assist against St. Bonaventure (more on that game later), and had a monster afternoon against Robert Morris, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.
She competed against Brooke Piper (Aurora, Ontario) of St. Bonaventure, who added 3 goals of her own against Nesbitt, and 2 more on the weekend against Siena. Teammate Kassi Hogan (Guelph, Ontario) had 2 goals and an assist for the Bonnies against Bucknell, and had two more against Siena.
Four Goal Club
Back to the mens side, several Canadians chipped in 4 goals. Yale’s David Anderson (Cambridge, Ontario) had a hat-trick plus one in their victory over Colgate. Levi Anderson (Calgary, Alberta) had four in a losing effort to Towson. Cornell’s Willem Firth brought his total to 8 goals in his first two collegiate games with another four goals against Denver.
Isaiah Moran-Weekes (Ottawa, Ontario) carried the torch for High Point and teammate Brayden Mayea this week with four of his own in a winning effort against Cleveland State. Meanwhile. Drexel’s Max Semple (Coquitlam, BC) had 4 of his own in their overtime victory over the Albany Great Danes. Lastly, Dyson Williams (Oshawa, Ontario) had a casual four of his own in their dominant victory over Duke.
Denver’s Lauren Black joins the as well after 4 goals and 2 assists in two games this week for the Pios. She’s joined by Louisville’s Nicole Perroni who had 4 goals in a losing effort against Virginia Tech.
Loosie Kings and Queens
Taylor Coughlin (Hespeler, Ontario) led all Canadians in loose balls this week with seven for Saint Francis. Coughlin is a goaltender, making her ground ball total more impressive.
Orillia’s Paige Stachura had a dominant week for Cansius, causing six turnovers and picking up 6 loosies. Over in Detroit, Maddy Camm (Elmira, Ontario) caused five turnovers and had five loosies, while Oakville’s Annabel Child had four caused turnovers of her own for a small college in Massachusetts (Harvard).
Mitchell Dunham (Hamilton, Ontario) paced the men on the defensive side of the ball, with 2 CT’s and 4 loosies. Meanwhile Luca Pivetta (Victoria, BC) had 4 loosies and caused 2 turnovers for the Utah Utes.
