The Coquitlam Adanacs are the 2025 Minto Cup Champions, and are the first western team to win the Minto on Ontario soil since 1977.

The Adanacs defeated the Orangeville Northmen 11-10 on Friday night at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines to sweep the best of three series and take home the trophy. It was the first time in their organization’s history that they have won back-to-back Minto Cups.

American Ryan Colsey led all scorers in the game with 4 goals and 2 assists, and put his name on an even more rare list as an American to win two Minto Cups. Cody Malawsky was named tournament MVP and added another goal and 3 assists while Jaxon Dillon had 4 assists.

Orangeville finally got the secondary scoring they had been missing all tournament, with 3 goals and 3 assists for Dylan Sanderson, 2 goals from Owen Rahn, and one from Vince Onofrio. Trey Deere also added 2 goals and 3 assists in the losing effort.

Just like in game one, the Adanacs jumped out to an early lead off a Ryan Colsey goal less than two minutes into the game. The Adanacs got two more markers in the period and led 3-1 after the first. Despite their strong finish for the rest of the game, it was these periods of lackluster play that hurt the Northmen in the playoffs, and they were not able to overcome it on Friday.

They did push back in the second, with four straight goals to open the period and they took the lead back. After a Coquitlam response, the score was tied heading into the third.

Lacrosse is a game of runs and the last one went the way of the Adanacs. After a strong start to the third period for the Northmen that saw them score three quick goals, the Adanacs went on a dominant four-goal run and held the Northmen off the board for more than 11 minutes. This run included a Coquitlam flurry of three goals in less than two minutes that would ultimately give them a lead that they would never relinquish.

Dylan Sanderson added a late marker to make it a one-goal game for the last few minutes, and Orangeville hit a crossbar as time expired, but the Adanacs survived and accomplished something that hasn’t been done in nearly a half-century.

The 1977 Burnaby Cablevision squad was the last BC team to win the Cup in Ontario, defeating Peterborough. The Adanacs also become the first BC team to repeat as Minto champions since the Burnaby Lakers did it in 2004 and 2005. 2005 was the first year of the modern format, and the tournament was held in Edmonton.

Cody Malawsky was named tournament MVP after his incredible 15 goal, 13 assist performance this week. He added 22 points in 5 games last year, and will go down as one of the great performers in the history of the Minto Cup.

That brings the 2025 Jr. A season to a close, and will shift the focus to the upcoming Presidents and Mann Cups, as well as the conclusion of the Founders. Stay tuned to LCD for more coverage all summer long!
